Tal’Dorei Campaign guide pdf is a sourcebook crafted by Matthew Mercer with the aid of James Haeck. This guide is presented as a reference for players looking to run their campaigns in the setting inhabited by Vox Machina.
The sourcebook covers the detailed history, geography, politics, and other folklore of the continent of Tal’Dorei as of one year after the Chroma conclave autumn. Furthermore, it contains information that has never been covered in the main storyline of Critical Role.
What is inside the tal’dorei campaign guide free pdf download?
Critical Role takes the role-playing world by storm; now, you can seek adventure!
Until now, the vast and perilous lands of Tal’Dorei have been the territory of this show’s adventuring company, Vox Machina. The time has come where you can traverse these realms in a tome, from the pen of Game Master, Matt Mercer.
This setting book delivers an in-depth look at the past, people, and areas in Tal’Dorei, and introduces new backgrounds, magic items, and monsters for the Fifth Edition rules.
What does Tal Dorei mean?
Tal’Dorei is the name used by people to refer to the continent in which the kingdom of Tal’Dorei resides, though this is plainly a human conflation. The Elvish title for the continent is “Gwessar,” which translates to “Fields of Joy.”

Using the book is relatively easy; between a full-page content list, three-page index, and just 144 pages of the book, it’s impossible to get lost.
It’s divided into four main sections: an overview of the setting (history, religion, races, and factions), a gazetteer (descriptions of geographical areas with corresponding plot hooks), character options (feats, class options, backgrounds, and magical items), and the bestiary. The book contains four new subclasses (blood domain, the juggernaut’s path, rune child sorcerer bloodline, and way of the Cobalt Soul). Furthermore, nine new feats, five backgrounds, and sixteen magical items are also added to this manual.
The guide ends with a section on monsters, including how existing monsters fit into the world and over a dozen new monster statistics. While most of these are distinct humanoid NPCs, there are many new inhuman foes included too.
The guide is well-written with a decent description and lovely turns of phrase. It ends with six pages on how the various monstrous races fit the world. This is a useful, engaging, and often forgotten part of campaign settings. The focus of the writer is on new heroes and stories. Furthermore, the new character options are reasonably good.
The names of several gods should have changed. Sarenrae, the Raven Queen, and Pelor—the mighty gods frequently named in the show — do not appear in this book under those terms. This campaign setting pdf doesn’t include the popular gunslinger fighter archetype or the blood hunter class. Some tinier history is included in the regional sections, but not all of it. This is a feature-bug, as you’ll get to make the setting your own, but the reason someone is purchasing this book is to learn more about the Critical Role world for the Livestream, so in terms of that, there’s less to learn here.
The things in this campaign sourcebook are small. At 500 x 1000 miles, Tal’dorei is short for a continent. Technically it’d be a large island. There’s also an issue of the northern areas being cold and snowy and the southern being covered by a jungle.
The book bursts with adventure hooks. Most of these aren’t just a hazy story hook that the DM then has to flesh out and complete, but the outline of a full adventure completes with suggested adversaries. The book also uses many fan artists in the Critical Role community (or “Critters”). In addition to this, the map is incredible. It’s acted as an in-world piece with texturing and a fold-line. It’s pretty, easy to read, and detailed.
